Abstrak :
This project will examine the extent to which the current framework of disaster management in Bali embraces the prospects of tourism development. It will further critically evaluate the scale of integration of the national strategies, approaches and actions of disaster management into the destination management practices in Bali. This will improve the preparedness of Bali to withstand the negative effect of potential natural disasters, such as volcano eruptions, thus building resilience of its local communities but also its tourism industry upon which the local communities are heavily dependent. To this end, the project will conduct a comprehensive literature review on the inter-play of destination management and disaster management as reported in the case studies from around the world. It will further adopt a qualitative research paradigm, i.e. semi-structured interviews with destination management and disaster management stakeholders in Indonesia and Bali as well as in the UK, in order to understand the current practices in effective co-management of tourist destinations and natural disasters. The interviews will also facilitate the compilation of a database of ‘good business’ practices on the synergy of destination management and disaster management in popular tourist destination worldwide. The results of the project will contribute to better understanding of the challenges of embracing destination management in the context of disaster management in Bali, thus informing the design of local and national policies on community resilience, destination resilience and sustainable tourism development.
